Michael set up Gruhe Architects in 2007 and has 10 years post RIBA qualification experience. He worked for 9 years at the Birmingham office of a leading international architects’ practice before joining Gruhe full-time in the summer of 2012. Prior to these, he also worked at prominent architectural practices in Oxford, Washington DC & Colombo (since 1995).
While working in the private sector, Michael has been responsible for award-winning residential schemes with particular experience in the design of private houses, student accommodation & residential apartments. His experience in the public sector has been in the design of a number of SureStart community centres dotted around the Midlands, various custodial work, a theatre & more recently on a high-end retail project in the Middle East.
Michael is committed to achieving uncompromised design quality via a sustainable approach (energy efficient, cost effective, responsible choices), that is tailored to suit a client’s requirements. Michael began his architectural studies in Sri Lanka, completing his BA (Hons) Architecture at Birmingham School of Architecture. He continued his Post Graduate Studies in Architecture & Energy Efficient Buildings, and completed his Masters in the latter at Oxford Brookes University. Returning to Birmingham, Michael completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Practice Management, and recently completed a part time Masters in Project & Enterprise Management at University College London. Michael is a member of the RIBA.
Michael is currently contributing toward a text book on Building Control in the UK. He has also participated on the ‘Ask an Expert’ RIBA panel at RIBA organised events including Grand Designs on numerous occasions. Apart from these, Michael enjoys DIY, gardening and photography when time permits!

Pearl joined Gruhe Architects in 2008. Since 2001, Pearl’s experience has been primarily in housing & master-planning.At PRP (Birmingham & Milton Keynes), Pearl worked on various option appraisals for projects in the West Midlands, an outline application for a masterplan extension to Berryfields in Aylesbury with 3,000+ dwellings & other major development areas; and a pilot scheme aimed at sustainably renovating individual homes belonging to Housing Associations. Obtaining her ARB, RIBA qualifications in 2004, Pearl worked at Walker-Troup (Birmingham), on regeneration competitions in & around the West Midlands for private developers, and numerous ‘pocket-sites’ for registered social landlords. She was also responsible for the design & planning approvals of a variety of residential projects including a Children’s Home in Aston, Birmingham. Pearl also worked at Gardner Stewart Architects (Birmingham), where she worked as part of a team on planning applications for 2 medium sized schemes in Lancashire as well as a masterplan extension to Oakgrove, Milton Keynes with 3000 dwellings. Pearl is devoted to achieving functional and aesthetic design that caters to the client’s brief & budget. Pearl began her architectural studies in Sri Lanka, completing her Post Graduate Studies in Architecture & Practice Management at Birmingham School of Architecture, and is a member of the RIBA.
Pearl has designed a range of T shirts and greeting cards for ‘Truth Products’, and has plans to expand! She enjoys baking with her daughters and wishes there was time for a good read and sewing!
